My initial concept for this was a pair of rulers who have suffered to try and do the best thing for their people, but still feel like they failed them and are ashamed of that. I wanted to create a sense of uneasiness both with the people in the picture being uneasy and trying to also share that feeling with the viewer.
Stylized self portrait
I love winter and it's my anticipation of winter that prompted this picture. I liked working with such a 2-D cutout like piece after so many paintings.
Concept for this was nightmares and the anxiety felt from them. Each image in the background is meant to be a typical fear like drowning, being laughed at by a large amount of people, or being forgotten.

Similar to the self portrait piece I commented on, I really like your stylized winter self portrait. You have a knack for putting shape, color and pattern together. It's smartly composed as well. I too feel that the background on the nightmare anxiety piece is working super well. The composition is strong as is the foreground/background relationship. I'm not really feeling the painting of yourself. It's not awful by any means, it's just more predictable and not as smart as the winter one. I do get a real sense of the emotion which is great! I like your lithographic approach to the pieces I've spoken about.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm supposed to critique. But its really difficult to critique when your art is amazing! I really like the value changes. That's one thing i noticed right away. I really like your winter piece also. I actually cant wait to see your next piece of art you post.
